How to keep white shirts white in Delhi

A white shirt in Delhi is fighting three things at once: fine dust that settles into the weave on a ten-minute walk, sweat that oxidises at the collar and cuffs, and hard water that leaves a grey film on cotton over a few washes. None of them needs a miracle product. They need the right order of operations.

Collars and cuffs first

The yellow ring at the collar is sweat and skin oil that has been set by heat. Once a shirt has been ironed over it, it is much harder to lift. So the rule at home is simple: never iron a shirt with a ring on it. Rub a little liquid detergent into the collar with a soft brush, leave it ten minutes, then wash. Do this every time, not once a month.

Wash whites with whites

This is the one people skip. A single navy sock in a white load transfers enough dye to dull every shirt in it, and hard water makes the transfer worse because the dye binds to the minerals. Whites go together, in warm water, with a full dose of detergent. Cold water is fine for colours; it is not enough for white cotton.

Hard water is the quiet culprit

Most of Dwarka has hard water. It leaves calcium and magnesium in the fibre, which is why whites go grey rather than yellow and feel stiff. A capful of white vinegar in the rinse dissolves the film. Fabric softener does the opposite: it coats the fibre and traps the grey.

Dry out of direct sun, iron with steam

Sunlight bleaches, which sounds helpful, but strong afternoon sun also yellows optical brighteners and weakens cotton. Dry in shade with airflow. Then iron with steam rather than a dry plate: steam relaxes the fibre and sets creases without the shine a hot dry iron leaves on collars.

When to send them out

• The collar ring has been ironed over and will not shift with detergent.
• Whites have gone uniformly grey and a vinegar rinse does not bring them back.
• You have more than six shirts a week and the ironing is what you are avoiding, not the washing.
